The allspice berry has the flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, and clove all in one little peppery berry. The allspice dram adds great flavors to this drink. It’s a great refreshing and tropical cocktail. The combination of the Jamaican and Demerara rums mixed perfectly with the spice of the pimento dram. The sweetness of the rum and the sourness from the juice just blend together perfectly. The Ancient Mariner can look like it may be a bit sweet, but when you have some you’ll find that it’s much drier than expected. Jeff has also introduced a few drinks of his own, like the Ancient Mariner. We say: a classic Margarita with a few tweaks. With: tequila, triple sec, lemon juice, falernum liqueur and saline solution. We say: Manhattan-esque, boozy and delicately spiced. He has revived long lost recipes and made drinks that had fallen out of favor, popular again. With: cognac, rye whiskey, Cardamaro, falernum liqueur and Angostura bitters. Jeff is considered the man at the front of the Tiki Revival we are seeing today. This was in Berry’s words “by the time we finished with it, that’s how old we felt.”ĭuring the process of trying to work out the secret ingredients in the Navy Grog, Jeff came up with this drink, which is alike, but still different from, the original. It first appeared in their 1998 drink guide Beachbum Berry’s Grog Log and is named after Coleridge’s 1798 The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. It’s a tiki drink created by Jeff “Beachbum” Berry and Annene Kaye. What are the Origins of the Ancient Mariner Cocktail? It also has fresh citrus juices (lime and grapefruit), and allspice dram, which brings a depth of flavor to this tiki rum sour (because that is basically what this is!) This tropical cocktail has a split rum base, meaning part Jamaican rum, part demerara rum. Stir in the rum and grapefruit juice, and then place the drink in the refrigerator. A split rum based cocktail, with light and dark rums and allspice dram is a winner! Instructions Begin by muddling together the mint leaves and coconut sugar. In typical tiki construction, this Ancient Mariner cocktail recipe was developed by Jeff Beachbum Berry.
